1. Grand Canal Dock
Gimbal · architecture · reflections · night
Exercise: film the same 10-second reveal three ways: static, slow push-in and sideways parallax. Repeat at blue hour and after the lights come on.
Audio lesson: record 30 seconds of ambience, then record dialogue with and without wind protection. The difference is often more useful than another cinematic shot.
2. Dún Laoghaire Harbour
Leading lines · walking shots · blue hour
Exercise: lock your shutter strategy, then follow one subject walking towards, across and away from camera. Notice when stabilisation helps and when it creates unnatural movement.
Light lesson: start before sunset and stay into blue hour. Keep the composition similar and learn how quickly exposure and colour temperature change.
3. Howth Harbour & Cliff Route
Establishing shots · wind · landscape B-roll
Exercise: build a 30-second sequence with one wide establishing shot, two mediums, three details and one moving shot. Do not add more clips until the sequence tells a clear story.
Audio lesson: Howth makes wind protection obvious. Compare camera mic, compact directional mic and wireless lav if you have them.
4. Phoenix Park
Long lens · subject separation · movement
Exercise: shoot the same walking subject at wide, normal and telephoto focal lengths without changing the final framing too much. Watch how the background compression changes.
Light lesson: practise backlight through trees, then move into open shade and compare skin exposure and highlight control.
5. Portmarnock Velvet Strand
Horizon · slow motion · wind · minimal frame
Exercise: make five clips with only one horizon position. Then repeat with a deliberately low and deliberately high horizon. You will see how much composition changes with one simple decision.
Movement lesson: use waves, walking and fabric movement to compare normal speed with carefully chosen slow motion.
6. St Stephen’s Green
People movement · exposure transitions · short-lens storytelling
Exercise: make a 20-second sequence without a gimbal. Use locked-off frames, one gentle handheld move and natural foreground movement.
Exposure lesson: move between tree shade and open sky while holding skin tones. Learn when auto ISO helps and when it produces visible exposure pumping.
7. Malahide Castle grounds
Walk-and-talk · establishing detail · controlled movement
Exercise: record one 45-second walk-and-talk. Prioritise consistent distance, clean audio and a stable horizon rather than cinematic movement.
Planning lesson: arrive with a six-shot list and leave when it is complete. Practice efficiency, not endless coverage.
